Milldown for Windows

The Mac version is out now. The Windows version is in development — same conversion engine, same on-device guarantee, built natively for Windows 10 and 11.

What the Windows version will do

Feature parity with the Mac app is the explicit goal, and the conversion engine is shared code — the same document produces the same Markdown on both. The one exception is OCR: scanned pages go through Apple’s Vision framework on macOS and the Windows OCR engine on Windows, so recognised text from scans can differ.

• The same formats — PDF (including scanned), Word, PowerPoint, Excel, EPUB, HTML, CSV, JSON, XML, ZIP archives, Jupyter notebooks, Outlook messages, images, plus any web page or YouTube transcript by URL.
• On-device OCR — scans and images are recognised locally with the Windows OCR engine. Nothing is uploaded.
• The same workflow tools — Clean Up, Context Packs, RAG chunk export, YAML front matter, watch folders, and the token-savings counter.
• Native Windows integration — Explorer right-click, Send To, a tray drop target, and a milldown command on your PATH.

What will be different

A few things are genuinely platform-specific:

• Keyboard shortcuts follow Windows convention (Ctrl rather than ⌘).
• The menu-bar panel becomes a tray icon with a drop window.
• The command-line tool covers the core conversion options rather than every engine flag.
• Updates are checked in-app and downloaded through your browser, rather than installed in place.

When?

The application itself is built and has been through the same interactive QA campaign as the Mac release. What remains is code-signing and a hardware test pass — we will not ship an unsigned installer, and Windows treats new signing identities cautiously, so the first releases may show a "Windows protected your PC" prompt until reputation builds.
